WIKILEAKS says its Twitter account details have been subpoenaed by the US government and that it hopes to fight the order.

WikiLeaks said yesterday that US investigators have gone to San Francisco-based Twitter Inc to demand the private messages, contact information and other personal details of Julian Assange and three people associated with the secret-spilling website. The popular micro-blogging site has declined comment.

An Iceland MP who is a former WikiLeaks volunteer says the US Justice Department has ordered Twitter to hand over her private messages.

Birgitta Jonsdottir, an MP for the Movement in Iceland, said last night on Twitter that the ”USA government wants to know about all my tweets and more since november 1st 2009. Do they realize I am a member of parliament in Iceland?”

”It’s not just about my information. It’s a warning for anyone who had anything to do with WikiLeaks.

”I am lucky, I’m a representative in parliament. But what of other people? It’s my duty to do whatever I can to stop this abuse.”

Meanwhile, Julian Assange is hiring a public relations agency after a series of damaging blows to his image. The WikiLeaks founder, who is on bail in the English countryside during his fight to avoid extradition to Sweden over sexual assault allegations, has taken a battering in the media in recent weeks.

The web whistleblower’s secret spilling, including the publishing of thousands of US embassy cables, has made him a worldwide celebrity. But it is the allegations against him that have led to scrutiny of his personal life.

Assange has not helped himself – with some unfortunate public comments since being freed last month after nine nights in a south London jail.

He risked angering sexual rights campaigners by saying that the two women making allegations against him had gotten into a ”tizzy” about his failure to have an STD test after unprotected sex with them.

His online dating profile has been dredged up, and he was accused of hypocrisy for complaining about details of the Swedish prosecution’s case being leaked to the media.

Assange’s team is looking to stitch up a deal with London PR agency Borkowski, owned by master publicist Mark Borkowski.

The agency has a team dealing with media inquiries relating to Assange and is setting up an online weekly media conference to deliver messages from Assange and WikiLeaks.

We will have to wait and see what happens with theĀ Wikileaks Twitter records. reported by Guardian
