WIKILEAKS says its Twitter account details have been subpoenaed by the US government and that it hopes to fight the order.
WikiLeaks said yesterday that US investigators have gone to San Francisco-based Twitter Inc to demand the private messages, contact information and other personal details of Julian Assange and three people associated with the secret-spilling website. The popular micro-blogging site has declined comment.

Hawaiians braced for an expected tsunami from a giant earthquake off the coast of Chile, as officials in the state evacuated thousands of residents and tourists to higher ground. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, on its Web site reported that “the tsunami has reached Hawaii and is just beginning to register on Big Island gauges.” But the first wave had not perceptibly hit the eastern side of Hawaii Island as of 11:45 a.m. local time, 25 minutes after it was expected to hit.

January could be the Army’s worst month for suicides since record-keeping started in 1980. The service announced Thursday that 24 soldiers may have killed themselves last month.
Seven suicides have been confirmed, the Army said, and 17 are suspected. If all are confirmed, it means that more than twice as many soldiers died by their own hand last month than were killed in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ten soldiers died in combat last month.

Reports from Somalia say pirates holding a Ukrainian ship loaded with weapons have received a ransom and are preparing to free the vessel.
The pirates seized the Kenya-bound MV Faina and its crew in September 2008.
It is the highest profile vessel in pirate custody, and there has been controversy over its cargo.
The Kenyan government says the tanks, rocket launchers and small arms are theirs, but the manifest suggests the arms were intended for South Sudan.
