Hawaiians braced for an expected tsunami from a giant earthquake off the coast of Chile, as officials in the state evacuated thousands of residents and tourists to higher ground. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, on its Web site reported that “the tsunami has reached Hawaii and is just beginning to register on Big Island gauges.” But the first wave had not perceptibly hit the eastern side of Hawaii Island as of 11:45 a.m. local time, 25 minutes after it was expected to hit.

In 2009, the job market will be full of contrasts: some industries will be eviscerated while others face shortages of workers. The good news is that despite the recession, there are still real jobs to be had. The bad news is that you may have to change fields to find one.
The trick to job hunting in 2009 will be to figure out how your skill-set can translate across industries, says Elaine Varelas, a managing partner at Boston-based outplacement firm Keystone Partners, so that you’re not confined to searching one sector …

Make Long-Term Changes, but Don’t Berate Yourself When You Fall Short
If you are familiar with different healthy eating/living books, you have probably heard of Dr. Oz. He is the co-author of “You On a Diet” and “You: The Owner’s Manual”. Here are the 5 top healthy tips for women from him.
Tip 1: Ease Up on the Stress to Control Eating
“When you have stress, you’ll eat more and things you wouldn’t normally eat,” Oz said. “That’s because we are hard-wired to equate stress to famine.”

Nvidia’s Tegra chip will be used in an upcoming Microsoft smartphone, according to an analyst at Broadpoint AmTech.
The San Francisco-based research firm also is speculating that Apple will eventually use the Nvidia ARM-based chip
in a future iPhone.
Broadpoint’s Doug Freedman said the Microsoft-branded phone would be the second Nvidia Tegra design win after HTC. “We believe the HTC ramp in ‘09 is the more material of the two as we have some concerns on the channel for Microsoft’s handset distribution given the lack of prior carrier relationships/handset qualification history,” he wrote …

Just after Apple announced its intention to create an online app store for the iPhone, “You’re witnessing the birth of a third major computer platform: Windows, Mac OS X, iPhone”?

Before you authors get upset, never fear: Google is making 1.5 million books available,
it announced today, that are in the public domain. There’s a lot of good stuff, including everything by Charles Dickens and (pre-zombified) Jane Austen. Google Says:
“We envision a future where people across the globe can search, discover and access the world’s books from any device,” Google spokeswoman Jennie Jarvis said in an e-mail.
For all the classics you’ll be able to find, there is also a very, very, very, very, very long tail of out-of-print books you’ve never even thought …

Craig Berry, who has been unemployed for 10 months, signs up for temporary work at a Manpower temporary agency in Chicago. The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits hit a 26-year high last week and factory orders plummeted in December.
As the deep economic downturn continues to swell the pool of unemployed workers, it is also delaying the recovery that will be needed to get those people back to work.
Even if Congress and the White House can agree on a huge program of fresh spending and tax …

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is being treated for pancreatic cancer, but doctors reportedly caught the small tumor early, which may improve her odds of surviving the usually deadly disease. Pancreatic cancer is relatively rare, but in the past few years, it has gotten more attention because it has afflicted actor Patrick Swayze and Apple CEO Steven Jobs. Here are some facts you need to know:
1. Pancreatic cancer is not a particularly common form of cancer. Despite the high-profile cases, fewer than 38,000 people were diagnosed with the disease last year, compared …

A year ago, GPS device-maker Garmin announced with some fanfare that it was developing a touch-screen phone that doubles as a location-based personal navigation device.
It was beginning to smell of vaporware until today. The company announced it is teaming up with Taiwan-based pc maker Asustek to roll out not one, but several “nuviphone” models this year.
One might still take this with a grain of salt, since the companies would say only that the first model is due in the first half. They also offered few specifics in a press release …
